Dentures Q&A

What are dentures?

Dentures are oral appliances used to replace missing teeth. Depending on the type of dentures, you can replace a single missing tooth or an entire dental arch.

There have been significant advances in denture technology in recent years, making today’s dentures more comfortable, secure, and beautiful than ever before.

The team of professionals at Advanced Care Dentistry draws on both scientific knowledge and a keen sense of aesthetics to make sure that your dentures improve both the appearance of your smile and your overall oral health.

What are the benefits of dentures?

By replacing your missing teeth with dentures, you can improve your ability to chew your food, make it easier for you to properly speak, and enhance your appearance.

It’s also important to note that dentures can significantly boost your confidence and self-esteem. Your smile is a fundamental tool for interacting with others and is a centerpiece in your appearance. By restoring your teeth with dentures, you make your smile whole again.

What are the different types of dentures?

There are a few types of dentures, each of which are designed to suit particular needs and preferences. When you get dentures, you’ll be able to choose between:

Complete or partial

If you’re missing all of your teeth in one or both dental arches or need to extract any remaining teeth you have left, you’ll want a complete denture. If you only need to replace a few missing teeth but have an otherwise healthy mouth, partial dentures can restore your smile while letting you keep your remaining natural teeth intact.

Partial dentures include prosthetic teeth that attach to your mouth with either a clip or a gum-colored base with openings where you still have healthy teeth remaining. They enable your new artificial teeth to work side-by-side with your natural teeth.

Traditional or implant-supported

There are two ways your dentures can attach to your mouth. Traditional dentures rest on top of your gums and stay secured to your mouth with either a suction mechanism or a dental adhesive.

Implant-supported dentures use dental implants to stay connected. Dental implants are biocompatible posts embedded in your jawbone, where they function like artificial tooth roots. Implant-supported dentures require a minor surgery, but they provide more support and comfort.

Immediate or conventional

If you’re extracting teeth to make room for your dentures, you’ll be able to choose between immediate dentures or conventional dentures.

With conventional dentures, the dental team takes an oral impression after your gums have healed from your extractions. This means that you’ll have to go without teeth while you wait for your gums to heal.

With immediate dentures, the dental team takes an impression before your extractions, so your dentures are ready to wear as soon as you have your teeth removed.

The advantage of immediate dentures is that you don’t have to be toothless while you heal. But, because your gums naturally change shape and shrink after your extraction, immediate dentures require more relinings.
