Cosmetic Dentistry Frequently Asked Questions

Teeth Whitening

Restore your smile’s brilliance, increase your confidence, and improve the aesthetics of your overall appearance with Zoom!® teeth whitening. At our Woodinville practice near Seattle, Washington our dentists can dramatically whiten your teeth and, in doing so, transform a nice smile into a dazzling smile. With the advanced Zoom!® teeth whitening system, we can significantly brighten almost anyone’s smile after a single one-hour office visit. Zoom!® is the same highly effective whitening system featured on the popular television series, Extreme Makeover.

The Zoom!® Teeth Whitening Process

When you visit us for teeth whitening, your teeth will first be thoroughly cleaned by our hygienist. A hydrogen-peroxide-based gel will then be applied to the teeth. Dr. Marxen or Dr. Yang will shine a special light on this gel, which allows it to penetrate the enamel of the teeth. Over the next 20 minutes, the light-activated gel breaks up even the most stubborn stains, including those created by coffee, soda, tea, wine, and tobacco. After this cycle is completed two more times, your teeth will be substantially whiter. Most patients achieve an improvement of at least eight shades.

If you would like to enhance the appearance of your smile with Zoom!® teeth whitening offered at our Woodinville, Washington practice near Seattle, please contact our office today. If you would prefer to bleach your teeth in the comfort of your own home, be sure to ask about our take-home teeth whitening kits.

Composite Bonding

Dental bonding is a simple and versatile treatment which can be used to address a range of aesthetic flaws in just one office visit. It may be used to alter the shape of a tooth or minimize gaps between teeth. Teeth which are chipped, cracked, or discolored may also be concealed through composite bonding offered at our Seattle-area practice. At the beginning of the bonding procedure, Dr. Marxen or Dr. Yang will roughen and condition the tooth to prepare it for bonding. This helps the bonding material adhere to the tooth’s surface. A putty-like resin is then applied to the tooth and carefully molded to look as natural as possible. With a special laser, the bonding material is hardened, and the bonded tooth will then be polished to match the texture of your surrounding teeth. The entire procedure takes no more than an hour per tooth. Composite bonding is among the easiest and most affordable of all cosmetic dentistry procedures. By enhancing the appearance of a tooth or several teeth, you can make a noticeable improvement in the overall appearance of your smile. For more information about composite bonding, contact our practice serving Seattle and Woodinville to schedule a free consultation.

OrthoClear™

Traditional metal braces are notoriously painful and noticeable, but thanks to recent advancements, orthodontic treatment does not have to be dreaded. As an alternative to traditional braces, our practice offers the OrthoClear™ system to residents of the Greater Seattle area. OrthoClear™ uses a series of clear, custom-molded aligners to gently and discreetly shift teeth into their ideal position. You will visit our office intermittently to replace your aligners with one that brings you closer to a perfectly aligned smile. This system is a highly effective teeth alignment method and has many advantages over metal braces. Because the OrthoClear™ aligners are removable, patients are free to eat chewy foods and clean their teeth as usual. In addition, unlike metal braces, OrthoClear™ aligners are clear, making them virtually invisible to others. The OrthoClear™ aligners are custom fitted to your mouth for more comfortable alignment than is possible with metal braces. Before long, you will be able to enjoy a straighter, more attractive smile. If you are interested in learning more about the benefits of OrthoClear™, schedule a consultation at our Seattle-area practice. Drs. Marxen and Yang will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for OrthoClear™ and help you take that first step toward a more balanced and confident smile.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges fill in the gaps left by missing teeth, restoring balance and beauty to your smile. A bridge is comprised of a replacement tooth held in place by crowns attached to the natural teeth on either side of a gap. When you visit Dr. Marxen and Dr. Yang, impressions of your teeth will be taken so that a laboratory can customize the crowns for your bridge. Before placing your customized bridge, our dentists will make sure that it is natural looking and fits comfortably in your mouth.

Dental Crowns

A porcelain crown is a durable shell which encases a damaged tooth to protect it and enhance the attractiveness of your smile. Today’s crowns are precisely color matched making them almost indistinguishable from your natural teeth. During your first visit to our office, Dr. Marxen or Dr. Yang will examine the tooth to be crowned and reshape it so that the crown will fit and adhere properly. Our dentists will take an impression of the tooth so that a customized crown may be manufactured. During your second visit, the crown will be securely cemented to your tooth. With proper care, your crown will preserve the health of your tooth and enhance your smile for years to come.

Gum Sculpture Therapy

We also offer gum sculpting to fine-tune your visible gum line. Using laser tools, our doctors can modify how much of your gums are visible when you smile and even out the gum line so you have a balanced, full smile. Treatments with laser dentistry are precise, quick, and pain-free.

Cosmetic Dentistry Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What will happen at my cosmetic dentistry consultation?

Our preeminent cosmetic dentists Thomas O. Marxen, D.D.S., M.S.D., and Erica Y. Yang, D.D.S., will carefully outline available treatments and explain which cosmetic dentistry options are best suited to your case. We understand that many patients feel apprehensive about dental appointments. That is why we offer conscious sedation as well as many amenities to patients interested in the general and cosmetic procedures available at our office.

Q. What can cosmetic dentistry do for me?

Most people can benefit from today's modern cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Marxen and Dr. Yang are highly trained dental professionals who can enhance and brighten your smile. Whether you suffer from minor aesthetic flaws such as chips or stains or more serious oral health complications such as decay or tooth loss, cosmetic dentistry treatments such as teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, and dental bridges can restore your teeth to their natural beauty.

Q. What can be done about chipped teeth?

Don't let chipped teeth stand in the way of your perfect smile. Even small chips can have a big impact on your appearance. Fortunately, damaged teeth can be treated with composite bonding or porcelain veneers.

Q. What are porcelain veneers?

One of the best ways to improve the look of your smile is with dental porcelain veneers. Tooth-colored porcelain material is shaped to fit over and bond to your existing teeth. Chipped teeth, gaps, and other flaws can be effectively hidden from view. Because they are bonded directly to the front surfaces of your teeth, dental veneers are long lasting as well as attractive. Dr. Marxen is a leading expert in porcelain veneers, having studied them for two years at the University of Washington Dental School graduate laboratory in Seattle. In addition, he uses an internationally acclaimed laboratory to help him create beautiful, natural-looking dental veneers.

Q. Can the gap between my teeth be fixed?

Dr. Marxen can correct gaps between teeth by placing porcelain veneers on neighboring teeth and then shaping the veneers to cover the gap. Composite bonding materials can also be used to build up a tooth to fill the gap. To learn more about composite bonding and porcelain veneers, contact our practice in the Seattle, Washington area today!

Q. Can you brighten my stained teeth?

Coffee, tea, tetracycline, and many other stains can easily be removed with teeth whitening offered at our Seattle, Washington-area practice. Our doctors can safely and quickly improve the appearance of your smile with teeth whitening techniques that will give you a bright, new look. A special tray holds a teeth-whitening gel against your teeth. The gel safely penetrates through the enamel and oxidizes or "bleaches" the proteins in your teeth. The teeth whitening process does not weaken teeth or affect the enamel.

Q. My gums show a lot when I smile. Can this be fixed?

Fortunately, many gum-related imperfections can be corrected with today's cosmetic dentistry. For example, we can lengthen teeth with porcelain veneers or composite bonding and sculpt your gum line with gum sculpture therapy to achieve a full, balanced smile.

Q. Should my old metal fillings be replaced?

In most cases, yes. Older mercury fillings expand and can crack your teeth, increasing your risk for needing emergency dental care and root canal therapy. New composite color-matched fillings are made from modern materials that don't expand and are stronger than metal fillings. Also, new fillings match the color of your teeth for a more flattering look.

Q. Can I know in advance how the results of my cosmetic dentistry treatment will appear?

Dr. Marxen uses the latest computer imaging technology so our patients can see the results of different cosmetic dentistry procedures before treatment. Your photo is entered into the imaging system as the "before" picture, then Dr. Marxen works with you to create your "after" picture. You'll be able to preview all details of your new smile, including the shape, size, and brightness of your teeth. This is a fun and exciting way to take part in creating the smile of your dreams.

How much does cosmetic dentistry cost?

Cosmetic dentistry treatment costs depend on whether you're undergoing a minor procedure or extensive treatment. We will be pleased to discuss the treatment options available to you and their costs in a free consultation. To schedule a complimentary cosmetic dentistry consultation, please contact our Seattle, Washington-area practice today.

Q. How long does it take to create a new smile with cosmetic dentistry?

The time involved depends on the extent of procedures. Many treatments, such as dental bonding or the replacement of old metal fillings with new, color-matched fillings, can be completed in a single visit. Comprehensive dental reconstruction may require longer treatment. Our doctors will discuss the details with you during your cosmetic dentistry consultation.
